Dr. Blues Local Reviews 5/21/12 |
Barrier Beach Blues-Motu MR 12501 2012
By sheer force of will and talent, Motu has carved out a niche in the musical landscape of Paumanok. A fine picker, when I listen to Dr. M’s guitar, the undeniable comparisons to acoustic Jorma fill my senses. Motu shows the undeniable influences of Piedmont , Delta as well as jazz guitar styling. Recorded at the Barrier Beach Bluesfest, Motu and Dee are joined by the Rocket and Lora Kendall to create a sublime and natural experience. The set featured a wide range of minimally amplified songs in a variety of subgenres. The Hot Tuna thread is exhibited by Rev. Gary Davis’ (via H*F*T) “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”, “Good Shepherd”, “Hesitation Blues”, “Mann’s Fate” and “True Religion.” John Fahey informs opener “Midnight Breeze” and “Smokestack Lightning” roars with Howlin’ Wolf intensity and articulate picking. Motu doesn’t neglect his own oeuvre as he tones down yet intensifies “Ain’t None Of Your Business.” The classic “ Erie Canal ” is given a respectful and raw reading on this disk. Co-vocalist Dee Chetta is as soft and warm as a mid-summer sea breeze, filling in where Motu’s gruff rumble leaves off, in fine harmony. The Rocket’s harp and Lora’s fiddle also contribute texture and organic feel on a disk that highlights a fine new side of the Motu story. |
